Hoopla complements Libby for e-books and audiobooks, but it also includes movies, tv shows, and music. (We have Taylor’s Version, of course.)
Hoopla will work a little differently than what we are used to in Libby. With Hoopla, the MCLS doesn’t own the items, which means that we are renting them so you may use titles free of charge. We have budgeted $12,000.00 with the intention of the funding lasting one year. Each patron will be able to borrow six items per month. This could change in the future depending on certain factors. With this being said, be careful about hitting that borrow button! You can always preview or add items to a list of “Favorites” to check out when you are ready.
MCLS Director Lowell Walters said, “Print format is still relevant, but more and more of our customers are going the electronic route. This is the way of the future, so we are shifting some print funds to be used on the electronic format.”
In the interest of saving and maximizing your sales tax dollars, you should still use Libby as your first stop for accessing e-books, audiobooks, and popular magazines. But if what you are looking for is not readily available in Libby, Hoopla may have what you are hoping to find.
Currently, MCLS customers have a little over 100,000 items available in Libby. Hoopla provides 17 times that number of items at approximately 1,700,000.
One Hoopla perk is the Instant Borrows. There is an unlimited number of copies available for most of the items, which means no waiting/ hold period. These are instantly available to you for twenty-one days.
BingePass allows you unlimited streaming to an entire collection for seven days. If you love Hallmark movies during the fall and winter, you’ll love BingePass!
Hoopla also offers Kid’s Mode. Grown-ups can activate Kid’s Mode and set a pin to implement parental restrictions. This is great to help monitor what your child is reading or watching.
